Bats & Roadside Mammals Surveys - 2009 update
We would like to say a big thank you to: Michelle
Fielden; Martin Horlock, Sam Neal, Malcolm
Fisher and friends, Margaret Attle, Sue and Jim
Cobb, John Worthington-Hill and James Bird for
their invaluable help undertaking surveys this
Summer for the Norfolk Bats and Roadside
Mammals Survey.
While there have been a few teathing problems,
the surveys went well, and we are looking forward to
a winter of sound analysis. Surveys start again in
May 2010! We will keep you up-to-date with the
latest findings via this website.
By the end of next year it is hoped that we will
have covered every hectad (10 km x 10 km
square) in Norfolk. This should provide us with a
distribution map of Norfolk’s bats like no one has
ever seen before!
Funding for the project has been kindly provided by NBIS and Natural England. For more information about this survey please email me: catherinegreenhough@hotmail.com or watch this space.
Bats & Roadside Mammals Surveys
Over the next two years volunteers from the Norwich Bat Group will be assisting with the Norfolk surveys of the "National Bats & Roadisde Mammals Survey" thanks to funding from Natural England, Norfolk Biodiversity Information Services and Norfolk Biodiversity Partnership.
The main aim of the survey is to gather data on the distribution, diversity and abundance of bats throughout the UK, as well as recording other mammals and birds observed.
The protocol for the survey is to slowly drive pre-defined transects throughout Norfolk with a bat detector and recording equipment set-up to record any bats that pass the vehicle.
A total of 10 - 12 volunteers, preferably car-owners, have been selected in order to fulfil the requirements of the survey.
Dr. Jon Russ - the national co-ordinator of the project has provided expert training in the use of the equipment and survey methods,
